Metsänreunat, or forest edges, refer to the transitional zones between forest interiors and open areas such as fields, clearings, or other non-forested habitats. These ecotones play a crucial ecological role by connecting different ecosystems and supporting a diverse range of plant and animal species.

Forest edges often exhibit higher biodiversity compared to the surrounding forest interiors or open areas. This is due to the combination of conditions found in both habitats, such as sunlight, wind, and soil types that differ from those in the forest interior. Sunlight penetration is greater at forest edges, allowing for the growth of shade-intolerant plants that would otherwise struggle in the darker forest understory. This creates a mosaic of vegetation that can include both forest and field species.

Wildlife benefits from the increased resources available at forest edges. Many bird species, for example, prefer edge habitats for nesting and foraging, as they provide a mix of cover and open space. Small mammals, insects, and other animals also thrive in these areas, which often serve as important corridors for movement between habitats. However, some species that rely on the deep shade and quiet of the forest interior may be negatively affected by the expansion of forest edges.

Human activities, such as logging, agriculture, and urban development, frequently alter forest edges, sometimes leading to fragmentation of natural habitats. While some fragmentation can benefit certain species, excessive edge creation can disrupt ecosystems by increasing vulnerability to invasive species, soil erosion, and changes in microclimates. Sustainable forest management practices aim to balance the ecological benefits of forest edges while minimizing negative impacts on forest integrity.

In Finland and other boreal regions, the careful management of forest edges is particularly important due to the dominance of coniferous forests. Properly maintained edges can support both productive timber stands and rich biodiversity, contributing to the long-term health of forest ecosystems.
