Meteorologists are scientists who study the Earth's atmosphere, weather processes, and climate. They analyze observational data and apply physical principles to understand how air, moisture, heat, and pressure interact and to predict atmospheric conditions. While the public often refers to weather forecasters, meteorologists typically have formal training in atmospheric science and may work in forecasting, research, or education.

Education and training: Most meteorologists hold a bachelor's degree in meteorology or atmospheric science; many pursue master's or doctoral degrees. Coursework covers physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and atmospheric dynamics. Professional certification is available through organizations such as the American Meteorological Society, which offers accreditation and credentials for consulting meteorologists, although such credentials are not always required to practice.

Tools and methods: Meteorologists rely on observations from weather stations, weather balloons, radar, satellites, and oceanic sensors. They use numerical weather prediction models, data assimilation, and ensemble forecasting to produce short-range to seasonal forecasts. Increasingly, machine learning and data science techniques support pattern recognition and climate research.

Work and impact: Employment spans government weather services, such as national meteorological and hydrological agencies, private forecasting companies, universities, and research institutes. Meteorologists issue forecasts and severe weather warnings, contribute to aviation and maritime operations, and conduct climate research and education.

History: The field emerged from manual observations and early thermometric studies and evolved with thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and computational modeling in the 20th century, leading to the global weather enterprise and modern climate science.
