Metaworldbuilding is a practice in speculative fiction and game design that foregrounds the artificiality of a fictional world by making its construction, rules, and reception a focal point. It treats the process of world creation as part of the narrative or experience, rather than a hidden background.

It differs from traditional worldbuilding, which aims to create coherent settings for narrative, by explicitly examining how information is revealed to audiences, who has access to it, and how the world is meant to be understood. Metaworldbuilding often includes self-aware elements that reflect on the act of worldmaking itself.

Common techniques include in-universe documentation, encyclopedic entries, and meta-narrative interventions in which characters discuss or question the world's rules. Designers may publish artifact-lore, create detailed rulebooks, and stage deliberate information disclosure to control discovery and interpretation.

Metaworldbuilding appears across media, including novels, film and television, tabletop role-playing games, and video games. It can deepen lore, invite audience participation, and enable critical or speculative commentary on genre conventions and the act of worldbuilding itself.

Critics warn that heavy self-reference can disrupt immersion, feel gimmicky, or obscure plot momentum if not integrated with care. Advocates argue it can create richer engagement by rewarding attentive readers and players who analyze the worldmaking process. In academic and design contexts, metaworldbuilding is discussed as a way to study how fictional systems are constructed and experienced.
