Metalltyper

Metalltyper is a term used to describe the range of metals and metal alloys commonly used in industry and manufacturing. The concept covers both elemental metals, such as iron and aluminum, and the many alloys created by combining metals with other elements to achieve specific properties. The classification helps engineers select materials based on strength, weight, corrosion resistance, and cost.

Major categories commonly used include ferrous metals, which contain iron (such as steel and cast iron); and nonferrous metals, which do not contain iron (such as aluminum, copper, nickel, zinc, tin, and titanium). Within nonferrous metals, noble metals like gold, silver, and platinum are valued for chemical stability and high conductivity, while base metals are widely used for everyday applications and often have lower cost.

Metalltyper also distinguishes between pure metals and alloys. Common alloys include steel (iron with carbon and other elements), cast iron, and stainless steel; copper alloys such as bronze (copper-tin) and brass (copper-zinc); and aluminum alloys (aluminum with magnesium or silicon). More specialized alloys include nickel-based and titanium-based systems used for aerospace, chemical, and industrial applications.

Properties and processing are central to metalltyper. Key attributes include tensile strength, hardness, ductility, electrical and thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance. Metals are refined from ores, smelted, and then alloyed or heat-treated. Processing methods such as casting, rolling, extrusion, and forming shape the final properties and applications. Recycling of metals also plays a significant role in managing supply and environmental impact.

Applications span construction, transportation, electronics, packaging, and consumer goods. The choice of metalltype affects performance, weight, durability, and total cost over a product’s life cycle.
