Metallilõiketeras

Metallilõiketeras, commonly referred to as metal cutting insert or carbide insert, is a removable component used in machining operations to cut metal. These inserts are typically made from extremely hard materials, most commonly cemented carbide (also known as tungsten carbide), which consists of hard carbide particles embedded in a softer metal binder. Other materials used for cutting inserts include ceramics, cubic boron nitride (cBN), and polycrystalline diamond (PCD), chosen based on the specific material being machined and the desired cutting performance.

The primary function of a metallilõiketeras is to shape a workpiece by removing material in the form of chips. They are designed with specific geometries and cutting edges that are optimized for different machining tasks such as turning, milling, drilling, and threading. The hardness and wear resistance of the insert material allow it to withstand the high temperatures and forces generated during the cutting process, enabling faster cutting speeds and longer tool life compared to traditional tools.

Metallilõiketerad are usually held in a tool holder by a clamping mechanism, allowing for quick and easy replacement when the cutting edge becomes worn or chipped. This modular design significantly reduces downtime and tooling costs in manufacturing environments. The selection of the correct metallilõiketeras depends on factors such as the workpiece material, the type of machining operation, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. Surface coatings, such as titanium nitride (TiN) or aluminum oxide (Al2O3), are often applied to the inserts to further enhance their performance, providing increased hardness, reduced friction, and improved thermal resistance.
