Metalliekstrudoinnin, also known as metal extrusion, is a metal forming process that involves pushing or drawing metal through a die of a specific cross-section. This process is used to create objects with a consistent cross-sectional profile. It is a continuous process, meaning that the metal is forced through the die to create a long, uniform length of material.

There are two primary types of metal extrusion: direct extrusion and indirect extrusion. In direct extrusion, a ram pushes the billet of metal through the die. The billet and the die are in direct contact, and friction can be a significant factor. In indirect extrusion, the die is attached to the ram, and the die moves through a stationary billet. This method generally results in less friction and allows for longer extrusions.

The extrusion process can be carried out hot or cold, depending on the metal's properties and the desired outcome. Hot extrusion involves heating the metal to a temperature above its recrystallization point, which reduces the force required for extrusion and allows for greater deformation. Cold extrusion is performed at or near room temperature, which can improve the mechanical properties of the material through work hardening and provides a better surface finish.

Commonly extruded metals include aluminum, copper, steel, and magnesium alloys. Extruded metal products find applications in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, construction, and electronics. Examples include window frames, automotive components, structural beams, and heat sinks. The process offers significant design flexibility, allowing for the creation of complex shapes and profiles that are difficult or impossible to achieve with other manufacturing methods.
