Metallicsounding is a descriptive term used in acoustics, music production, and audio analysis to indicate a timbre that is bright, ringing, and reminiscent of metal. It typically refers to sounds whose spectrum emphasizes high frequencies and presents rapid, resonant transients, often with inharmonic partials that do not align with a simple harmonic series as found in bells or cymbals. The result is a perceived clang, crack, or crystalline edge that can be either desirable in stylized contexts or problematic if clarity is required.

Acoustic and electronic sources of metallic timbre include real metal instruments such as bells, gong, chimes, and struck metal beams, as well as synthesized sounds produced through methods like ring modulation, FM synthesis with high ratios, resonator or comb-filter processing, and sample manipulation that preserves short, bright transients. Material properties (density, elasticity) and geometry influence the resonant spectrum and the degree of inharmonicity, contributing to a metallic character.

Perceptual cues associated with metallicsounding timbres include a high spectral centroid, strong high-frequency energy, a quick attack with a pronounced transient, and a lingering ringing tail. The partials are often nonharmonic, giving a sense of stiffness or edge rather than a smooth, musical tone.

In critical listening and recording, excessive metallicity can reduce intelligibility or warmth, so producers balance it with dampening or complementary textures.
