Metafocus

Metafocus is a term used across several disciplines to denote attention to the level at which focusing occurs, i.e., focusing on the process of focusing itself rather than on a particular object, task, or scene. The concept is typically described as a meta-level orientation toward attention and goals, rather than a primary object of focus.

In cognitive science and psychology, metafocus may refer to metacognitive regulation of attentional control: individuals monitor when their attention wanes and apply strategies to refocus. In information design, user experience, and human–computer interaction, metafocus describes approaches that encourage users to reflect on their objectives and prioritize actions, aligning interactions with higher-level aims. In media studies and communication theory, metafocus can denote analysis of what is emphasized within content and how attention is directed, enabling critique of framing and audience interpretation.

Because metafocus spans diverse domains, it lacks a single standardized definition and is often used informally to describe meta-level attention or reflection on focusing practices. Some discussions emphasize methodological considerations, such as how to measure attentional meta-processing or how to design interfaces that support meta-focus without disrupting task performance.
