Metadirecters are a proposed or emergent role in media production and theory that denotes an individual responsible for overseeing the directing process across multiple units, segments, or layers of a complex project. The concept stresses meta-level coordination rather than hands-on directing of individual scenes, and its precise functions vary by context and organization.

Core responsibilities commonly include ensuring tonal and narrative consistency across episodes or modules, aligning visual style and pacing, resolving inter-director conflicts, and making high-level decisions about world-building, character arcs, and overarching themes. They may review or approve directorial plans, provide creative guidance, and synthesize input from various directors into a coherent whole.

Metadirecters appear most often in large-scale television productions with multiple showrunners, anthology series, or cross-platform projects, as well as in experimental theater or transmedia campaigns where cross-disciplinary direction is required. In some contexts the role is closely aligned with showrunners, executive producers, or creative directors, and the title may be used interchangeably with those positions depending on the organization.

Critics note that the role can risk centralizing control and diminishing director autonomy if not clearly defined, and that authority and responsibility must be delineated to avoid conflicts. The term itself is not universally standardized and may be used descriptively or aspirationally rather than as a formal job title.
