Messzweig

Messzweig, literally “measuring twig,” is a historical German term for a simple field measuring device used in surveying and related practices. The name derives from messen (to measure) and Zweig (branch).

Construction and use: A messzweig consists of a straight branch or small wooden rod, often marked with graduations by carving or painting.
