Mesoecologists are scientists who study ecological processes occurring at intermediate spatial scales, often referred to as the meso-scale. This scale typically falls between the micro-scale (e.g., individual organisms or small patches of habitat) and the macro-scale (e.g., entire landscapes or biomes). Mesoecology bridges the gap between fine-scale interactions and broad-scale patterns, investigating how processes at these intermediate levels influence ecosystem function and biodiversity.

The focus of mesoecological research can vary widely, encompassing topics such as the spatial distribution of species within a habitat mosaic, the movement of organisms between patches, the influence of landscape structure on ecological communities, and the connectivity of fragmented ecosystems. They might examine how factors like habitat heterogeneity, edge effects, or the spatial arrangement of resources shape ecological dynamics.
