Mercurials
Mercurials are compounds or preparations that contain mercury (Hg) and have been used in medicine, dentistry, and industry. The term covers inorganic mercurial salts such as mercuric chloride (HgCl2) and mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2), organomercury compounds such as thimerosal and phenylmercuric compounds, and older substances employed as antiseptics, disinfectants, or diuretics. In addition, dental amalgams consist of mercury-containing alloys used in fillings, and cinnabar pigment (mercuric sulfide, HgS) has a long history as a red pigment.
