Menstruationstasse

A menstrual cup, known in German as a Menstruationstasse, is a reusable feminine hygiene product. It is shaped like a bell and made of medical-grade silicone, rubber, or thermoplastic elastomer. The cup is inserted into the vagina during menstruation to collect menstrual fluid rather than absorb it.

When inserted, the cup forms a seal against the vaginal walls, preventing leaks. The menstrual fluid then flows into the cup. To remove it, the base of the cup is gently pulled to break the seal, and the contents are emptied, typically into a toilet. The cup is then rinsed with water, and can be washed with mild, unscented soap before reinsertion or storage.

Menstrual cups are often marketed as an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to disposable products like pads and tampons. They can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time, depending on the flow, and a single cup can last for several years with proper care.

The use of a menstrual cup requires some practice to master insertion and removal. Some individuals may experience a learning curve. Hygiene is crucial, and proper cleaning between uses and sterilization between cycles is recommended to prevent infections. While generally safe, potential concerns include accidental breakage of the seal leading to leaks, or difficulties with removal for some users.
