Mellomrom

Mellomrom is a term used to describe a blank area or interval between two elements. It is applied in several fields, including language and typography, mathematics, and computing. In language use, it largely refers to the blank character that separates words and, in writing, interacts with punctuation and formatting. In mathematics and logic, mellomrom can denote an interval or the set of values between two endpoints. In computing and data processing, it refers to whitespace that programs treat as separators or formatting, and which can affect parsing and display.

In typography, there are several space characters beyond the ordinary space. The standard space (U+0020) is the most common. Other spaces include the non-breaking space (U+00A0), which prevents a line break, as well as en space (U+2002), em space (U+2003), thin space (U+2009), and hair space (U+200A). Many typographic rules use specific spaces to improve readability, such as inserting a non-breaking space between numbers and units in some contexts to avoid a break between them.

In Norwegian publishing and general writing, a single space typically separates words. There is no space before most punctuation marks, while spacing after punctuation follows standard rules of typography. In digital text, mellomrom also appears as whitespace that can be collapsed by HTML rendering, or preserved by using non-breaking spaces to maintain layout.

In mathematics, mellomrom can denote an interval, specifying the values between two boundaries, with open or closed variants. The concept also appears in design and user interfaces as the intentional spacing between elements to enhance readability and usability.
