Melanocetus is a genus of deep-sea anglerfish commonly known as black sea devils. These fish are characterized by their extremely dark coloration, large mouths filled with sharp, fang-like teeth, and a bioluminescent lure that protrudes from the head of the female. This lure, called an esca, is used to attract prey in the dark depths of the ocean. Male Melanocetus are significantly smaller than females and are parasitic, attaching themselves to the female and fusing their circulatory systems.
