Mekanistiska refers to a mechanistic approach to understanding natural phenomena, asserting that processes can be explained primarily through mechanical interactions of matter and energy. In Swedish scholarship, the term describes a stance rather than a single school, and it is often contrasted with vitalism, teleology, or holistic approaches.

Historically, mekanistiska explanations emerged during the scientific revolution as part of the Cartesian program to describe nature in terms of particles in motion and physical laws. Mechanistic thought contributed to viewing living organisms as machines, with bodily processes reducible to physics and chemistry. This paradigm was reinforced by Newtonian dynamics and later refined by experimental methods in biology, physiology, and psychology.

Core tenets include mechanistic causation, reductionism, and the search for universal laws governing matter and motion. Explanations emphasize interacting components, forces, and energy transfer, often employing mathematical models and experimental manipulation to test predictions. The approach prioritizes predictive accuracy and explanatory simplicity, while downplaying purpose or vital causes.

In modern science, mekanistiska perspectives have been complemented or challenged by systems theory, cybernetics, and emergent-property research. Critics argue that strictly mechanistic accounts can overlook functionality, organization, and subjectivity in complex systems.
