An emergent property is a characteristic of a complex system that cannot be predicted or understood by examining the properties of its individual components in isolation. These properties arise from the interactions between the parts and are more than the sum of their individual contributions. Emergent properties are a hallmark of complex systems, appearing across various disciplines, from physics and chemistry to biology and sociology.

In physics, the concept of temperature is an emergent property of a gas. Individual gas molecules do not possess temperature; rather, temperature emerges from the collective kinetic energy of a vast number of molecules. Similarly, in chemistry, the wetness of water is an emergent property. Individual hydrogen or oxygen atoms are not wet, but when combined as H2O molecules and interacting with each other, the property of wetness arises.

Biology provides numerous examples. Consciousness is widely considered an emergent property of the complex network of neurons in the brain. Individual neurons have specific functions, but consciousness, the subjective experience of being aware, arises from their intricate and dynamic interactions. Collective behavior in ant colonies or bird flocks, where individuals follow simple rules but the group exhibits sophisticated coordinated actions, is another illustration. In sociology, the formation of culture or public opinion can be seen as emergent properties of individual human interactions within a society. The key idea is that the whole system exhibits behaviors or characteristics that are not present in any of its constituent parts.
