Mehrdrahtiger

Mehrdrahtiger is a German neologism formed from mehr (more/multiple) and Draht (wire) with the suffix -iger, used informally to describe objects or systems that rely on a large number of electrical conductors. The term is not a standard or officially defined entry in engineering handbooks, but it appears in colloquial discussions to convey the idea of high wiring complexity.

In practice, mehrdrahtiger can refer to devices, components, or installations characterized by numerous wires or signal paths. This may include multi-conductor cables, large terminal blocks, dense wiring in industrial control panels, or distributed control architectures where power and data are carried along many separate conductors. The expression is sometimes used humorously or descriptively to contrast with simpler, single-wire or fewer-conductor configurations, and may be associated with “spaghetti wiring” in older or sprawling setups.

Advantages associated with mehrdrahtige approaches, insofar as the term is used, include potential redundancy and clear separation of signals or power lines, which can aid maintenance and fault isolation if designed with proper organization. Disadvantages include higher routing complexity, increased bulk and weight, greater material and labor costs, and a heightened risk of crosstalk, electromagnetic interference, and faults from many connection points.
