Mehiläishoidon

Mehiläishoidon refers to the practice of beekeeping, which involves the maintenance of honey bee colonies, typically in artificial hives. This practice is undertaken for various reasons, including the production of honey, beeswax, pollen, and royal jelly, as well as for crop pollination services. Beekeepers, also known as apiarists, manage their hives to ensure the health and productivity of the bee colonies.

The core activities in mehiläishoidon include regular inspections of the hives to monitor the colony's condition, check for diseases or pests, and assess honey stores. Beekeepers also manage swarming, a natural reproductive process where a portion of the colony leaves with a queen to form a new one, by taking preventative measures. Honey harvesting is a key activity, where frames containing capped honey are removed from the hive, the caps are sliced off, and the honey is extracted, usually through centrifugal force.

Different types of hives are used, with the most common being the Langstroth hive, which allows for easy inspection and management of individual frames. Other types include the top-bar hive and the frame hive.
