Apiarists are individuals who keep, manage, and care for honey bees, typically in hives. This practice is known as apiculture, and apiarists are also referred to as beekeepers. Their primary role is to ensure the health and productivity of their bee colonies, which involves a range of tasks throughout the year.

The work of an apiarist includes regular inspections of the hives to check for signs of disease or pests, assess the health of the queen bee, and monitor the colony's food stores. They also manage swarming, a natural reproductive process where a portion of the bee colony leaves with the old queen to establish a new one. Apiarists may intervene to prevent swarming or to capture swarms for new colonies.

Beyond hive management, apiarists are responsible for harvesting honey and other bee products such as beeswax, pollen, and propolis. This requires careful timing and techniques to extract the products without harming the bees or the hive. Some apiarists also engage in breeding queen bees or selling nucleus colonies (small, established bee colonies).

The motivations for apiarists vary. Many are commercial beekeepers who rely on honey production and pollination services for their livelihood. Others are hobbyists who keep bees for personal enjoyment, a desire to contribute to bee conservation, or to produce honey for their own use. Regardless of scale, apiarists play a crucial role in supporting bee populations, which are vital for pollination in agriculture and natural ecosystems.
