Megállóhely

Megállóhely is a term used in Hungarian to denote a designated point on a public transport route where vehicles stop to pick up and drop off passengers. The word combines megálló (stop) with hely (place). In practice, megállóhely refers to a stop along a line that is not a full station, and it is used for both rail and road transport. A megállóhely is typically simpler than an állomás (station): it may have a platform or pedestrian crossing, a shelter or bench, and basic timetable information, but usually lacks extensive facilities, ticket offices, or staff.

Railway usage: In Hungarian rail terminology, megállóhely (halt) denotes a designated passenger stop on a railway line that may not have substantial buildings. Trains serving the line stop there according to the timetable. Some megállóhely may be temporary or seasonal, while others are permanent fixtures as part of regional networks. The distinction between megállóhely and állomás is administrative and functional rather than purely physical.

Road and light-rail contexts: The term is also applicable in bus, tram, and trolleybus networks, where it marks a point on the route intended for boarding and alighting. In everyday language, however, people often use megálló or buszmegálló for such stops. In official timetables, a megállóhely is a published stop with defined accessibility and safety features.

Signage and naming: Megállóhely names follow operator conventions and appear on schedules and maps. Signage typically includes the stop name and a mode-specific pictogram (bus, tram, rail).
