Megtörténnie

Megtörténnie is not a standard standalone verb form in Hungarian; the canonical non-finite form of the verb is meghatár: the infinitive is megtörténni, meaning to happen or to take place. The prefix meg- on the root történ- (to happen) signals completeness or emphasis, and the verb is commonly used to refer to events or occurrences.

The basic verb is megtörténni. Its conjugation follows regular patterns for verbs with -ni infinitives: present tense történik (it happens), past tense megtörtént (it happened), future construction often uses meg fog történni (it will happen). The noun form for “an occurrence” or “an event” is megtörténés. The past participle meg­történt describes something that has already occurred.

Etymologically, megtörténni combines meg- with történni, the latter being the intransitive verb meaning to happen. The prefix meg- adds a sense of completion or realization of the event. This construction is common in Hungarian when discussing events, incidents, or happenings that have occurred or are expected to occur.

Usage notes: while megtörténni is standard, the form megtörténnie is not part of the typical Hungarian lexicon. In standard dictionaries, you will not find megtörténnie as a separate entry; if encountered, it is usually a misspelling, a stylistic variation, or a nonstandard/poetic rendering rather than a recognized non-finite form. When referring to an event in non-finite constructions, speakers generally use megtörténni or the noun meg­ történés depending on the sentence.
