It covers the analysis of kinematics, dynamics, energy flow, and efficiency in machines such as linkages, cams, gears, pulleys, and actuators. The term emphasizes the work-producing aspect of mechanisms, distinguishing it from purely geometric kinematics.

Analytical approaches include velocity ratio calculation, torque and power transmission, Jacobian methods for motion transfer, energy methods, and simulation of friction and wear. Designers consider efficiency loss due to friction, lubrication, backlash, and compliance; they select materials and bearings accordingly. The study often uses loop-closure equations for mechanism position analysis and dynamic equations for force distribution.

Applications span robotics, manufacturing automation, automotive transmissions, and biomechanics. Examples include four-bar linkages transmitting motion, rack-and-pinion systems converting rotation to linear displacement, cams generating nonuniform motion profiles, and pulley systems changing force and speed.

Mechanismswork overlaps with mechanism design, kinematics, and dynamics, and some scholars view it as a rebranding rather than a distinct discipline. When used, it serves as a multidisciplinary framework for optimizing work output, energy use, and reliability in mechanical systems.
