Mayoritarias refer to political parties or movements that hold a majority of seats in a legislative body, such as a parliament or congress. This term is commonly used in contexts where elections result in a single party securing more than half of the available seats, allowing it to govern without needing coalition agreements. In many democratic systems, a majority government provides stability and clarity in policy-making, as it allows for the direct implementation of the party’s platform without the need for compromises with opposition forces.

The concept of majority rule is rooted in democratic principles, where the will of the majority is considered legitimate if it is expressed through free and fair elections. However, the term "mayoritarias" can also be used more broadly to describe any party or coalition that dominates political discourse, even if it does not hold an absolute majority. This broader sense may sometimes be criticized for giving undue influence to dominant groups, potentially at the expense of minority interests.

In some political systems, particularly in countries with proportional representation, the term may be less applicable, as smaller parties often hold significant representation. However, in systems with first-past-the-post voting, majority governments are more likely to emerge, shaping governance structures and policy outcomes. The stability provided by majority rule can be advantageous for long-term planning but may also limit diversity in governance approaches.
