Mastopexie

Mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure aimed at raising and reshaping sagging breasts. The surgery repositions the nipple-areola complex to a higher, more centered position, tightens and redrapes excess skin, and can improve breast contour and fullness. It may be performed with or without the placement of breast implants to restore volume.

Indications for mastopexy include ptosis due to aging, pregnancy and breastfeeding, significant weight loss, or changes in breast shape from hormonal factors. Candidates typically desire a more lifted breast appearance, improved nipple position, or a reduction in the areola size. It is usually chosen by individuals who have completed childbearing and have realistic expectations about scarring and results.

Techniques for mastopexy vary according to the degree of sagging. Common incision patterns range from a crescent lift (limited lift along the top edge of the areola) to periareolar (donut) and vertical (lollipop) approaches, and up to an inverted-T or anchor pattern for more extensive lift. The surgeon removes excess skin, reshapes the breast tissue, and repositions the nipple-areola complex. In some cases, implants are used to restore upper-pole fullness or overall volume, resulting in an augmented mastopexy.

Recovery typically involves a period of activity restriction, with swelling and bruising expected for several weeks. Sutures may be dissolvable or require removal. Final shape is assessed over several months as tissues settle. Potential risks include infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, changes in nipple sensation, scarring, asymmetry, and the possibility of revision or additional procedures. Results are generally long-lasting but can be affected by aging, pregnancy, or significant weight changes.
