The term highlights the paste or slurry form of the coating material, as opposed to liquid or electroplated coatings.

Coating methods typically involve applying the paste by brush, screen printing, syringe deposition, or other dispensing techniques, followed by a heat treatment or chemical curing to form a continuous film. The resulting layer is often thin and can be tailored for functional purposes such as electrical conductivity, wear resistance, corrosion protection, or aesthetic effect. Common materials used in massapinnoitteet include metal pastes (for conductivity or bonding) and ceramic or enamel-like pastes (for decorative finishes or protective barriers).
