Maskantal

Maskantal is a fictional concept used in speculative fiction and performance art to describe a ceremonial or symbolic mask that integrates sensors and actuators to produce synchronized audiovisual effects. The term is encountered across multiple media in a shared fictional setting, though its exact origin is treated differently by authors, often described as a compound of mask and talisman or as an ancient term with contested roots.

In most depictions, a maskantal is crafted from lightweight wood, ceramic, or polymer, and embedded with LEDs, small speakers, motion sensors, and haptic actuators. A central control unit, sometimes hidden in the wearer's garments, modulates light, sound, scent, or vibration in response to facial expressions or voice cues captured by the mask's sensors. The device is designed to enhance ritual significance by creating a perceptual link between the wearer and observers.

Maskantals are often worn during rites, performances, or ceremonies that convey status, lineage, or magical power within the fictional culture.
