Masisi

Edouard Ngirente Masisi is a Rwandan politician who has served as the President of Rwanda since April 2024. Born on December 1, 1962, in the Nyamasheke District of Rwanda, Masisi holds a degree in economics from the University of Rwanda and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Rwanda as well. Prior to his presidency, he held several key positions in Rwanda’s government, including Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Finance.

Masisi began his political career in the 1990s, working closely with the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), the political party that has dominated Rwanda’s government since the 1994 genocide. He served as the Minister of Infrastructure from 2008 to 2011, overseeing major infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and energy development. From 2011 to 2017, he was Minister of Finance, where he played a crucial role in economic reforms, including tax policy and public expenditure management.

In 2017, Masisi was appointed Vice President of Rwanda, serving under President Paul Kagame. During his tenure, he focused on economic diversification, infrastructure expansion, and regional integration, particularly through Rwanda’s participation in the East African Community. His leadership was marked by efforts to improve Rwanda’s business environment and attract foreign investment.

Following the resignation of President Paul Kagame in April 2024, Masisi was sworn in as the new President of Rwanda. His presidency has been characterized by a continuation of Rwanda’s development agenda, with an emphasis on economic growth, technological advancement, and regional cooperation. Masisi has also emphasized national unity and reconciliation, building on Rwanda’s post-genocide recovery efforts.

As President, Masisi has maintained Rwanda’s strong diplomatic relations, particularly with neighboring countries and international partners. His leadership has been praised for its stability and focus on sustainable development, though some critics have raised concerns about political restrictions and limited opposition representation in Rwanda’s political system.
