Manipulaatioon

Manipulaatioon is the illative form of the Finnish noun manipulaatio, meaning manipulation. The concept refers to influencing another person’s behavior, thoughts, or emotions, often through covert or deceptive means. It is typically contrasted with ethical persuasion, which is transparent and consensual.

Common techniques include emotional manipulation (guilt-tripping, flattery), gaslighting, misinformation, misdirection, and exploitation of trust or power. Manipulation can occur in intimate relationships, families, workplaces, politics, media, and online interactions.

Consequences for victims include reduced autonomy, confusion, and damaged self-esteem; for society, erosion of trust and manipulation of public opinion. Ethical concerns emphasize autonomy, consent, fairness, and the avoidance of coercion.

Prevention focuses on critical thinking, verification, clear boundaries, transparency, and support networks. Education in media literacy and reporting abuse help identify patterns and reduce harm.
