Manananggal

The Manananggal is a mythical creature from Philippine folklore, particularly prominent in the Bicol region. It is described as a woman who can detach the upper half of her body from her lower half, transforming into a winged monster. The severed upper torso is said to sprout large bat-like wings, allowing it to fly through the night.

During the day, the Manananggal appears as an ordinary woman. At night, it detaches its upper body, which then grows fangs and a long, prehensile tongue. This tongue is used to reach into houses through small openings, searching for sleeping victims. It is often said to prey on pregnant women, using its tongue to suck out the fetus or the heart of the unborn child. Conversely, it may also target people in their sleep, feeding on their internal organs.

The lower half of the Manananggal remains standing and immobile while the upper half hunts. Legends often state that the creature can be defeated by finding its severed lower torso and sprinkling it with salt or ash. If the upper half cannot rejoin its lower half before sunrise, it will perish. The sound of its wings is often described as a flapping noise, and a distinct clicking sound is said to indicate that it is near. The Manananggal is a prominent figure in Filipino horror and urban legends, often featured in stories and films.
