Mallityypikäsitteet refers to the concepts of model types. In various fields, including statistics, machine learning, and software engineering, models are used to represent phenomena, predict outcomes, or describe systems. Understanding different model types is crucial for selecting the appropriate tool for a given task.

One common distinction is between descriptive and predictive models. Descriptive models aim to explain existing data, summarizing patterns and relationships without necessarily forecasting future events. For example, a survey analysis that describes the demographics of a population is a descriptive model. Predictive models, on the other hand, are designed to forecast future values or occurrences based on historical data. Regression models and time series forecasting are examples of predictive models.

Another important classification is between parametric and non-parametric models. Parametric models assume a specific functional form for the relationship between variables, with a finite number of parameters to be estimated. Linear regression is a classic example. Non-parametric models, conversely, make fewer assumptions about the underlying data distribution or functional form, allowing for more flexibility. Decision trees and kernel methods are often considered non-parametric.

The choice of model type depends heavily on the problem at hand, the available data, and the desired outcome. Different model types have varying strengths and weaknesses regarding interpretability, computational cost, and performance on different types of data.
