Malerfaget

Malerfaget, commonly translated as the painting trade, comprises professionals who prepare surfaces and apply paints, coatings, wallpapers, and decorative finishes on buildings, furniture, and other objects. The field covers interior and exterior painting, protective coatings for wood, metal and concrete, wallpapering, and decorative techniques.

Typical tasks include cleaning, sanding, filling and priming surfaces; selecting and mixing colors; applying paints using brushes, rollers or spray equipment; wallpaper installation and removal; varnishing and sealing; and maintenance or restoration of painted surfaces. The work often involves working at heights, exposure to dust and solvents, and using scaffolding, lifts, and personal protective equipment.

In Norway, malerfaget is a vocational education subject within yrkesfag. Training combines school-based instruction with apprenticeship in a company, leading to a fagbrev (craft certificate) upon completion. The program covers surface preparation, paint technology, color theory, coatings, safety, environmental requirements, and project planning.

Workplaces include painting contractors, construction companies, housing and property management, and industrial facilities. Many painters are self-employed or run small firms. The trade emphasizes quality finish, durability, and aesthetic effect, as well as modern coatings for energy efficiency and moisture control.

Regulatory and professional aspects: adherence to safety standards, handling of hazardous substances, and environmental regulations. The profession is represented by trade unions and employer associations that coordinate training and continuing education.
