Makuupussi

Makuupussi is the Finnish term for a sleeping bag, a portable, insulated bag designed for sleeping outdoors or in shelter environments. It provides warmth by trapping body heat and isolating the sleeper from the ground and surrounding air. The bag is used with a sleeping mat to further reduce heat loss through the ground.

Most makuupussit come in two basic shapes: mummy-shaped bags that taper toward the feet to maximize warmth and minimize weight, and rectangular bags that provide more room and are easier to move in. Insulation materials vary; down insulation offers high warmth-to-weight and compactness, while synthetic insulation generally performs better when damp and is typically less expensive. Outer shells are commonly made of lightweight nylon or polyester fabrics, often with a water-repellent finish. Many bags include features such as a draft collar, an insulated hood, and an insulated or full-length zipper draft tube to reduce heat loss.

Temperature ratings indicate the conditions under which the bag is expected to keep a sleeper warm. Ratings are often presented as comfort and limit temperatures, and some manufacturers also provide an extreme rating. Users should select a makuupussi based on expected outdoor conditions, humidity, and personal comfort preferences.

Care and maintenance: down-filled bags require dry storage and careful washing to preserve loft, while synthetic-filled bags are more forgiving of moisture but may lose loft over time. Proper drying and storage help extend lifespan.
