Makromolekyyliä

Makromolekyyliä, commonly referred to as macromolecules, are very large molecules composed of repeating structural units. These units, known as monomers, link together to form long chains or complex three-dimensional structures. The term "macromolecule" is often used interchangeably with "polymer," although polymers specifically refer to molecules made up of many repeating monomer units, while macromolecules can also encompass molecules that are large but not necessarily formed by repetition.

In biology, macromolecules are fundamental to life and are broadly categorized into four main types: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Carbohydrates, such as starch and cellulose, are composed of sugar monomers and serve as energy sources and structural components. Lipids, including fats and oils, are diverse in structure but are generally hydrophobic and play roles in energy storage, cell membrane formation, and signaling. Proteins are made from amino acid monomers and perform a vast array of functions, from catalyzing biochemical reactions (enzymes) to providing structural support and transporting molecules. Nucleic acids, DNA and RNA, are composed of nucleotide monomers and are responsible for storing and transmitting genetic information.

Synthetic macromolecules, or synthetic polymers, are also prevalent in modern society. These include materials like polyethylene, PVC, and nylon, which are manufactured for use in plastics, textiles, and numerous other applications. The properties of macromolecules, both natural and synthetic, are determined by their size, shape, and the chemical interactions between their constituent monomers and surrounding molecules. Their large size and complex structures enable them to carry out specialized functions and contribute to the diverse properties of matter.
