Magmakasaan

Magmakasaan is a rare mineral described in volcanic and materials science literature. It forms in magmatic environments where rapid cooling yields a glassy, lamellar solid with inclusions derived from the surrounding melt. The name combines “magma” with a regional term meaning strength, reflecting its reputed thermal resilience.

Composition and structure: The mineral shows variable composition, typically dominated by magnesium, silicon, aluminum and calcium, with trace metals such as iron, copper, and chromium. It occurs as glassy to microcrystalline masses with elongated, plate-like inclusions arranged in layered mosaics. Its structure is often poorly ordered.

Physical properties: Magmakasaan ranges from dark green to black and has a vitreous to dull luster. Mohs hardness is about 5.5–6.0. Density is relatively high for a silicate rock, and it displays strong resistance to high-temperature deformation, making it of interest for experimental ceramics.

Occurrence: Reports come from several volcanic complexes in island-arc settings and comparable continental margins, where magmas are silica-rich and evolve rapidly near vents. Magmakasaan commonly occurs in vesicular domes, lava flows and hydrothermally altered rock, often associated with other silicate glasses.

Research and applications: Because of its high thermal stability and distinctive microstructure, Magmakasaan has been investigated for use in heat-resistant ceramics, glass-ceramics, and potential optical materials. Its variability in composition and brittleness limit commercial use, but it remains a topic of geologic and materials science interest.
