Macrochannels

Macrochannels are relatively large conduits through which fluids can move, distinguished from smaller microchannels and mesochannels by their cross-sectional dimensions and flow behavior. The term is used across disciplines, including microfluidics, porous media, geoscience, and tissue engineering. In engineering, macrochannels typically span from around 0.1 mm up to several millimeters in hydraulic diameter, and serve as primary pathways for bulk flow; they may connect reservoirs to networks of smaller channels. They enable higher volumetric flow rates with lower pressure drop compared with microchannels, but can suffer from reduced flow control, dead zones, and less uniform mixing. In microfluidic devices, macrochannels are often integrated to shuttle fluids between microfabricated features or to house reservoirs, valves, or sensors.

Natural macrochannels occur in soils, sediments, and fractured rocks where large conduits guide groundwater, oil, or sediment transport. In vascular biology and tissue engineering, macrochannels refer to channels designed to resemble larger vessels to improve perfusion within a scaffold, typically >100 µm in diameter, enabling rapid nutrient delivery while micro- and meso-scale networks handle exchange at the cellular level.

Design and analysis considerations include coupling between macro- and micro-scale flow, channel geometry, surface roughness, wettability, and leached or fouling effects. Characterization methods include flow rate measurements, imaging, and computational fluid dynamics to predict pressure drop and velocity profiles. Researchers tailor macrochannels to balance pressure requirements with transfer efficiency in cooling systems, chemical reactors, and tissue scaffolds.
