Maaki

Maaki is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, commonly known as sunflowers. The genus contains a few species, with the most well-known being Helianthus annuus, the common sunflower. Sunflowers are native to North America and are cultivated worldwide for their edible seeds, oil, and ornamental value.

The plants are characterized by their large, daisy-like flower heads, which typically have bright yellow ray florets surrounding a central disk of smaller, often brown or black, disc florets. Sunflowers exhibit heliotropism, meaning their young flower buds and leaves turn to face the sun throughout the day. Mature flower heads generally remain fixed in position, facing east.

Sunflower seeds are a source of oil, protein, and various nutrients, including vitamin E and selenium. Sunflower oil is widely used in cooking and as a biofuel. The plant's stalks can also be used as fodder for livestock or for producing biomass.

In addition to their agricultural and culinary uses, sunflowers are popular garden plants and are often grown for decorative purposes. Their vibrant colors and large blooms make them a striking addition to landscapes. Various cultivars have been developed with different flower sizes, colors, and plant heights. The genus name "Helianthus" is derived from the Greek words "helios" (sun) and "anthos" (flower).
