MCrAlYBasis refers to a class of superalloys commonly used as bond coats in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). These alloys are primarily composed of nickel (Ni) or cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), aluminum (Al), and yttrium (Y). The "M" in MCrAlY represents the base metal, which is typically nickel or cobalt. Chromium contributes to oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength, while aluminum is crucial for the formation of a protective aluminum oxide (Al2O3) scale. Yttrium, a reactive element, significantly improves the adhesion of the TBC to the substrate by promoting the formation of a more tenacious oxide scale and preventing spallation.
