MC68020

The Motorola 68020 is a 32-bit microprocessor that was introduced by Motorola in 1984. It was a significant advancement over its 16-bit predecessors, the 68000 and 68010. The 68020 was the first member of the Motorola 68000 family to be a true 32-bit processor, featuring a 32-bit data bus and a 32-bit address bus. This allowed it to access significantly more memory than previous generations.

Key features of the MC68020 include a 16.7 MHz clock speed and on-chip instruction cache. It also introduced support for virtual memory and a memory-managed unit (MMU) which could be added as a separate chip. The instruction set was enhanced with 32-bit integer operations and support for bit fields. This processor was designed to execute instructions more efficiently, improving overall performance.

The MC68020 found its way into a variety of high-performance computer systems of its era. It was notably used in the Apple Macintosh II, Amiga 2500/3000, and many workstations from companies like Sun Microsystems and Silicon Graphics.
