MC60

MC60 is a compact, modular, and portable computer system developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. Introduced in 2018, it is designed as a low-cost, open-source alternative to traditional laptops, emphasizing affordability, customization, and accessibility for users in resource-limited environments.

The MC60 features a modular design, allowing users to swap out components such as the display, keyboard, and storage. Its core components include a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4-based motherboard, which powers the system with a quad-core processor, 1–4 GB of RAM, and expandable storage via microSD cards. The device runs on Linux-based operating systems, such as Ubuntu or Debian, and supports a range of software applications, including educational tools, productivity software, and multimedia programs.

One of its key innovations is its detachable keyboard and screen, which can be connected via USB-C, enabling users to repurpose the system as a desktop or tablet. The MC60 is also designed to be repairable and upgradeable, reducing electronic waste and lowering long-term costs. Its open-source nature allows for community-driven development, with contributions from engineers, educators, and developers worldwide.

The MC60 was initially developed as part of the MIT Media Lab’s Open Source Computer initiative, aiming to provide a high-quality computing experience at a fraction of the cost of commercial alternatives. It has been deployed in schools, community centers, and developing regions to promote digital literacy and educational opportunities. While not as powerful as modern laptops, it offers a practical solution for basic computing needs, including web browsing, document editing, and programming.
