Mälestuseseme, also known as memorial stones or memorial plaques, are physical markers used to commemorate individuals, events, or groups, often with the aim of preserving their memory and significance. These objects serve as tangible reminders of historical, cultural, or personal importance, typically inscribed with names, dates, or symbolic messages. They are commonly found in public spaces, cemeteries, museums, and memorial parks, where they help maintain collective memory and honor those being remembered.

In Estonia, mälestuseseme have played a crucial role in preserving the nation’s history, particularly during periods of occupation and resistance. Many of these markers were erected during the Soviet era (1940–1991) to honor victims of political repression, including those who died in labor camps or were executed. After Estonia regained independence in 1991, the preservation and installation of new memorials became a priority, reflecting both historical remembrance and national identity.

Mälestuseseme often feature standardized designs, such as simple stone slabs with engraved text or symbolic motifs like crosses, anchors, or hammer-and-sickle symbols (in cases of anti-Soviet commemoration). Some are accompanied by plaques listing names of the deceased, while others include brief inscriptions explaining their significance.
