Lærdómsstílar, often translated as learning styles, refers to the idea that individuals learn best when information is presented in a way that aligns with their preferred sensory or cognitive modalities. While the concept has gained popularity, its scientific validity is debated within the educational psychology community.

The most commonly discussed learning styles include visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading/writing. Visual learners are thought to benefit from diagrams, charts, and other graphic representations. Auditory learners, on the other hand, are believed to learn most effectively through listening, such as lectures or discussions. Kinesthetic learners are often described as hands-on individuals who learn by doing and experiencing. Reading/writing learners tend to prefer information presented in text format, allowing them to read and write notes.

Despite the widespread adoption of learning style theories in educational settings, research has largely failed to demonstrate that tailoring instruction to a student's purported learning style leads to improved learning outcomes. Studies often show that students perform similarly regardless of whether the teaching method matches their stated preference. Critics argue that focusing on learning styles can lead to oversimplification of complex learning processes and may even limit students by encouraging them to avoid learning methods outside their perceived style. Current educational consensus leans towards multifactorial approaches to instruction, emphasizing varied teaching methods that engage multiple senses and cognitive processes, rather than adhering strictly to individual learning style preferences.
