Lääkärisilmälääkäri
Lääkärisilmälääkäri is a Finnish term that translates to "medical ophthalmologist." This refers to a medical doctor who has completed specialized training in ophthalmology, the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and injuries of the eye. An ophthalmologist is qualified to perform eye examinations, prescribe medications, fit contact lenses, and perform complex eye surgery. They deal with a wide range of conditions affecting the eyes, from common refractive errors like myopia and hyperopia to more serious conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Unlike optometrists, who are not medical doctors, ophthalmologists have a comprehensive medical education and can treat eye diseases medically and surgically. They are often involved in managing the overall eye health of patients, especially those with chronic conditions or requiring surgical intervention. The training to become a lääkärisilmälääkäri is rigorous and typically involves medical school followed by several years of residency training specifically in ophthalmology.
