Lämpötilakäsittelyllä is a Finnish term that translates to "by heat treatment" or "through thermal processing" in English. It refers to the controlled application of heat and subsequent cooling to alter the physical and chemical properties of materials, most commonly metals and alloys, but also ceramics, polymers, and even food. The primary goal of heat treatment is to improve a material's performance for a specific application by modifying its microstructure.

Common types of heat treatment include annealing, which softens a material by reducing internal stresses and refining its grain structure; hardening, which increases hardness and strength, often by forming martensite; tempering, which reduces the brittleness of hardened materials by reducing internal stresses and increasing toughness; and normalizing, which refines the grain structure and improves uniformity without as much softening as annealing. Other processes like case hardening, precipitation hardening, and stress relieving also fall under the umbrella of thermal processing.

The specific temperature, duration of heating, and cooling rate are critical parameters that determine the outcome of a heat treatment process. These parameters are carefully chosen based on the material's composition and the desired final properties. For example, a high carbon steel will require different heat treatment parameters than a low carbon steel or an aluminum alloy. Understanding and controlling these variables is essential for achieving consistent and predictable results in manufacturing and engineering.
