Luxol
Luxol is a name associated with several uses in different fields. The most widely recognized reference in science is Luxol fast blue (LFB), a histological stain used to visualize myelin in nervous tissue. Luxol fast blue is a blue dye that binds to lipids, making myelin sheaths appear blue. In routine practice it is often paired with a counterstain such as cresyl violet or nuclear fast red, producing a two-color preparation in which myelin is blue and neuronal cell bodies are purple or pink. The technique is commonly used in neuropathology to assess white matter integrity and to identify demyelinating conditions, including multiple sclerosis. Variations of the protocol may involve different differentiating steps and solvents to optimize contrast between myelin and other tissue components.
