Lunkerns

Lunkerns are a fictional subterranean mammal-like species described in fantasy literature and role-playing game sourcebooks. They are typically medium-sized, measuring about 40 to 60 centimeters in body length with a cylindrical, robust frame and a short, dense fur coat that ranges in gray-brown tones. The head is broad with a blunt snout, small eyes adapted to low light, and long tactile whiskers. The limbs are stout, ending in broad claws used for digging.

Habitat and range: Lunkerns are said to inhabit damp woodlands, peat bogs, and forested marshes within fictional regions such as the continent of Eldershore. They construct extensive tunnel systems called lunkways beneath leaf litter, roots, and waterlogged soil. These networks can extend for meters and serve as refuges from predators and as corridors for foraging and storage.

Behavior and diet: They are primarily nocturnal and exhibit solitary tendencies or form small family groups. Lunkerns feed on a mixed diet that includes fungal rhizomorphs, tubers, invertebrates, and decomposing plant matter.
