A lukunäyttö, often translated as a reading display or reading screen, is a type of electronic display specifically designed for the comfortable and efficient reading of text. Unlike standard displays found in computers or televisions, lukunäyttö units prioritize features that reduce eye strain and improve readability. Key characteristics include the use of e-ink or similar low-power display technologies that mimic the appearance of ink on paper. This results in excellent contrast and no inherent backlight, which can be a significant source of eye fatigue.

These displays are typically monochromatic, displaying text in black and white or grayscale. They often have very high resolutions and pixel densities, allowing for sharp text rendering. The refresh rate of a lukunäyttö is generally much slower than conventional screens, which is acceptable for reading static text but makes them unsuitable for video playback or fast-paced gaming. Their low power consumption is another major advantage, enabling devices equipped with lukunäyttö to have exceptionally long battery life, often lasting weeks on a single charge.
