Luktkvaliteter refers to the qualitative aspects of odors as perceived by the olfactory system. They describe the character or identity of an odor (for example fruity, floral, nutty, spicy, or woody) rather than its strength. Odor quality is influenced by the chemical composition of a scent mixture and the way odorants interact with olfactory receptors, as well as by physiological and contextual factors.

In sensory science, luktkvaliteter is determined using descriptive analysis with trained panelists who score odor descriptors and intensities. Dynamic and time-dependent changes can also shape perceived quality. Instrumental approaches such as gas chromatography–olfactometry combine chemical separation with human detection to link specific compounds to odor qualities. Odor units and odor thresholds quantify detection, while GC-O helps identify which compounds contribute to a given odor.

Factors influencing luktkvaliteter include molecular structure, functional groups, concentration relative to threshold, temperature, humidity, and the presence of other odorants (mixture effects). Individual variation in olfactory receptors, adaptation, culture, experience, and expectation can lead to different perceived qualities. Applications span food and beverage, fragrance, environmental monitoring, and indoor air quality. Regulators may rely on standardized odor descriptors and threshold-based metrics to assess nuisance odors. Limitations include subjectivity of perception and inter-individual differences, emphasizing the need for standardized methods and multivariate analysis.
