Lotfollah

Lotfollah, also transliterated Lotfollāh, is a Persian masculine given name meaning “grace of God” or “favor of God.” It is used in Iran and among Persian-speaking communities.

The most famous use of the name in architectural history is Lotfollah Mosque, a prominent monument in Isfahan, Iran. The mosque is situated on the eastern side of Imam Square (Meidan Emam) and was constructed in the early 17th century, around 1619 to 1621, during the Safavid dynasty under Shah Abbas I. It was built to serve as a private prayer space for the royal court rather than a public congregational mosque. The building is commonly studied as part of the broader Naqsh-e Jahan Square ensemble and reflects the era’s architectural innovations and aesthetic ideals.
