Loriculus

Loriculus is a genus of birds in the parrot family Psittaculidae. These birds are commonly known as Hanging Parrots due to their unique roosting posture where they hang upside down. They are native to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

The genus Loriculus contains several species, including the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, Vernal Hanging Parrot, and the Philippine Hanging Parrot. They are small in size, typically measuring between 10 to 15 centimeters in length. Their plumage is predominantly green, with some species exhibiting vibrant red, blue, or yellow markings on their heads, throats, or wings.

Hanging parrots are characterized by their short, notched beaks and their ability to feed themselves with one foot while holding food in the other. They are primarily frugivores and nectarivores, feeding on fruits, nectar, and buds. Their nests are usually built in tree cavities or hollow branches.

These birds are generally solitary or found in pairs, though they may form small flocks outside the breeding season. Their vocalizations are typically high-pitched chirps and whistles. The conservation status of Loriculus species varies, with some facing threats from habitat loss and the pet trade.
